And so this holidays dished up one of life’s firsts for me-work. It lasted shorter than I expected (no I did not get fired XD) and not quite like I expected, yet a series of events cumulated in a short volunteering stint that granted me a peek at what work was like, generally.
At the Resource and Wellness Centre, National Cancer Society Malaysia, basically what I did was to do anything the all-female staff needed to be done and were to busy to do. In short, typing, printing, faxing, guests lists, media lists, delivery, packaging, answering calls about mammograms and cervical cancer vaccines and, a lot of GOOGLING. Ah, the wonders of Google in finding names, designations, addresses, stuff like that. XD Google is amazing. Yup, I do thank Sergey M. Brin and Lawrence E. Page for the wonders of Google! (I googled to find their names).
Oh ya and I was saying, all-female staff. Other than a few drivers and deliverymen, the staff were entirely female. Maybe its because its primarily a volunteer organisation and men statistically rather than women, hold permanent jobs. Anyhow after one long stressful instance one of the staff pulled me aside and warned me to NEVER EVER work with no men on the staff. I suppose in many ways girls do need guys in spite of what feminist movements may argue otherwise haha. Guys are naturally good in some things, and girls are in others. Balance.
Like in life in all its normalcy, my time there had its fair share of black and white, plus all colours in between, but I’m essentially glad to have a back-the-scene glimpse of how an NGO runs and plans for events, such as World Cancer Day for instance @ Suria KLCC.
Extremely skinny and agile CBN gymnasts.
Cute kids. XD
Students forming the yellow ribbon.
Work was a paradox of easy times and stressful moments, boring ones and exciting eye-openers, but it was good to have done it for the experience. Anyhow, it was great to continue the self proclaimed bumming session at home- of sleep, Internet, movies, Chuck, food.
Here’s to one last week of the holidays!
